Heart of Zillertal - Heart of the Alps

Mayrhofen is located at the end of the Zillertal valley and is one of the best known holiday destinations through out Austria, maybe even throughout the Alps. It seems like there's nothing behind Mayrhofen but a wall of huge mountains, but the Zillertal splits up into 4 smaller valleys called “Grounds” - Zillergrund, Stillup, Zemmgrund und Tux - carved into the Zillertaler Mainridge, which is also a Naturepark , so Mayrhofen is not the end, it is the center - heart of Zillertal, heart of Alps.

Mayrhofen has about 6.000 inhabitants. Along the high street you will find bars, pubs, coffees and restaurants, mountain shops, ski rentals, groceries, stores for everything, banks, doctors, hairdresser, bakeries - simply all you need.

The "Europahaus" , a congress center, offers daily changing events - concerts, traditional evenings, comedy show, multivision shows etc etc.
Music events are also celebrated at Sennerei Zillertal , which is in main a dairy factory, offering guided tours through the production area.

Mayrhofen is the gate to the Zillertal Alps, offering all you can find in our ACTIVITIES section. But if you just want to enjoy the great nature in Mayrhofen and surroundings, there are also countless possibilities.

Your can drive the Zillertaler Höhenstrasse , an alpine road which leads you high up above the valley, with amazing views., or visit the water dams in Zillergrund , Stillup or Schlegeis - all with very impressive scenery. The highest point you can reach without climbing is the panorama terrace at 3.250m on Hintertuxer Glacier . From there you can step into the glacier at Nature's Ice Palace or visit the caves beneath the glacier at Spannagel Cave .

You can reach surrounding valleys by car or by foot, Tristenbachalm and Klausenalm in Ginzling are just one example. Enjoy delicious traditional food and live music while watching the mountains and glaciers.

If you like exploring, Mayrhofen is perfect to use as a base for day-trips to nearby must-see places. A nostalgic trip using the Zillertal Steam Train and the Cogwheel Steam Train to the Achensee , a beautiful mountain lake about 30km from Mayrhofen. From there you can reach two fascinating points on earth - Gramai and Ahornboden - two valleys with breathtaking scenery.

A Trip to Krimml Waterfalls , the highest water falls in Austria, and then further on the Großglockner Alpin Road up more than 2.500m and have a look to Pasterze one of the largest glaciers and to Austria's highest Mountain - Goßglockner 3.798m.

If you are interested in history, take a trip to Innsbruck , capital of Tyrol and take a look at the beautiful architecture, museums and the "Golden Roof" , or Salzburg the city of music, or perhaps a visit to the very interesting Alpine Zoo in Innsbruck?

There is so much to do, you will have to return again and again.

After a long day on the slopes skiing in winter or hiking in summer, there is always something to do in the evenings. Many Pubs and Bars are located directly in Mayrhofen - all with their own special style - some to chill, relax, and some to party in. For example Scotland Yard Pub , Apropos , Mo's or Coup & More .In high season you will find some live music to keep you entertained ranging from traditional music with local musicians, to modern contemporary artists, especially in winter the Aprés Ski Bars are open as soon as the slopes close. Most party trips end in one of the large night clubs like Brückenstadl or Fuchslöchl which stay open until the early hours.

Beside these there are several great events during the year. Party weekends celebrated by famous local music bands with thousand of visitors mostly takes place in summer, there is now a Comedy Festival held annually. Other events are held during Snowboard and Freestyle Contests, the most famous being "Snowbombing Festival" - one week of snowboarding and partying, always celebrated around Easter - which attracts almost ten thousand people.
